School Information

An honor for me, a student-teacher from Indonesia, to have a chance to be a part of SEA Teacher Program in Iriga City, Philippines and USANT Junior High School as my receiving school.

HISTORY

University of Saint Anthony (USANT) is a non-sectarian and non-profit educational institution was established on August 18, 1947. From a small high school later becoming a college, acquired university status on December 18, 1973. The University of Saint Anthony becomes the first university established in Iriga City and also the first in the Philippines under martial rule.
Atty. Santiago G. Ortega, Jr., the only son of the founder Doña Deregla-Ortega, became the president of the USANT since 1984.

GENERAL INFORMATION

USANT Junior High School is one of department that University of Saint Anthony has. The High School department of USANT has been selected as one of the private schools nationwide to be included in the DOST – Engineering and Science Education Project. Under this DOST, Special Science Classes (SSC) was started in School Year 1994-1995.

USANT Junior High School has aims to provide its students the opportunity to live a moral, spiritual, social, intellectual, and productive life in a democratic society that recognizes their intrinsic worth and dignity as individuals.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT SYSTEM

There are many available facilities to support the teachers to execute their lessons and helped the students to develop their academic, skills, talents, and self-esteem. There are Library, Science Laboratory, Multimedia Room, Forum, Sport Court, Wi-Fi Connection, and Study Area that supported both teachers and students to achieve the learning goals. This is related with one of USANT specific objectives which is to create an environment where everyone is given the opportunity to develop himself thru academic, extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.

TEACHING SYSTEM

Teaching system in USANT Junior High School based on Constructivism Learning Theory. The school uses K to 12 curriculum. As a whole, it is learner-centered and inquiry-based, which is the teachers whom in charge in facilitate learning process, while the students themselves whom in charge to expose their ability more.

USANT also offered The Special Science Class (SSC) in response to the demands of this era of robotics and super scientific gadgetry. SSC Class actually is the government’s aim to strengthen Mathematical abilities, Science skills and English proficiency of the learners at the secondary level in the Philippines.

SSC Class is not majoring class. It is class that expected to producing scientifically, technologically and globally competitive graduates. To be qualified in SSC program, all prospective first year enrolled are required to undergo rigid screening and pass a DOST prescribed selection test. Once in the program, it is imperative for the student to maintain a grade not lower than 80% in any subject area and a general average of 85%.

What make SSC Classes different from regular classes because students in SSC learn special subjects like Earth Science, Advanced Biology, Advanced Chemistry and Calculus. Difficult lessons, a lot of subjects, long schedule, many assignments and projects are the life of a SSC student. It’s the design of the curriculum to have more subjects rather than the regular curriculum.

MATERIALS AND LEARNING SOURCES

The teacher used books that available in Library, chalkboard, power point presentation, LCD projector. The teacher always relates the topic in human daily activity when teaching the students.

MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION SYSTEM

The teachers assess the students learning and abilities by test and non-test. Test used to assess student’s cognitive by giving them worksheet or some questions at the end of teaching. Meanwhile Non-test used to assess students psychomotor by giving them laboratory practice or oral discussion.

CURRICULUM

USANT Junior High School use The K to 12 Curriculum. K to 12 is learner-centered and inquiry-based, emphasizing the use of evidence in constructing explanations. The acquisition of this curriculum is facilitated using the following approaches: multi/interdisciplinary approach, science-technology-society approach, contextual learning, problem/issue-based learning, and inquiry-based approach.

LESSON PLAN FOR CHEMISTRY SUBJECT

The teachers in USANT Junior High School make Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan. It’s simpler than lesson plan that Indonesia has. In Indonesia, the teacher should make Detailed Lesson Plan, the teacher should write the interaction/ conversation between teacher and students from opening until closing the class. While in Semi-detailed Lesson Plan it is just big line of teaching procedures, the teacher doesn’t need to write the interaction between teacher and students.

Teacher used 6Es procedures as teaching methodology and inquiry-based approach. As shown in pictures below.

SCHOOL SYSTEM

I found a prominent difference with the school system between Philippines and Indonesia.

Junior High School in Philippines is 4 years and Senior High School is 2 years, and there is no majoring in Senior High School. As compare, Junior High School in Indonesia is 3 years and Senior High School is 3 years also, and there are majoring in Indonesia Senior High School: Science, Social, or Language Class .
